There are two main areas of legislation on traffic noise originating from the European Commission - Interoperability Directives and Environmental Noise Directive. At the beginning of this paper the noise sources from rail transport are noted. The following sections of this paper present the Directives on interoperability and their historical development. This paper focuses mainly on the role of noise from rail transport in Interoperability Directives. Lastly, the possible measures for reducing noise from rail transport are mentioned.
